Post-Gallery UPDATES!! GDG on TV!

Hey everyone! Just wanted to let you all know what's going on with stuff since we closed our little gallery space last summer. We've been pretty busy. I finally updated the website so that all the shows are now online. We've got a complete archive of every show we ever had the pleasure of presenting during our two years, and they're all online for you to check out.

We've also been very busy trying to get the Gallery Deluxe Gallery catalog/book together, finally. The projected deadline is sometime this summer, so we'll see how that goes. We've got a wonderful essay by Meredith Dault (who wrote our piece in the Globe) in the book, as well as hopefully an introduction by Halifax art veterans Cathy Busby and Garry Neil-Kennedy! We'll let you know when the book is printed, and how you can order one.

Finally, we just got our hands on a cute little piece that was done on the Gallery last year for CBS's That News Show. Darryl Kyte interviewed us in the gallery, and it's been airing occasionally since. This is the first time we've actually seen it, and it's really nice! We've got it in the Press section, so you can watch it too! Check it out!!!

Summer in the Gallery!

So, it's mid-May... almost June.. and the sun is shining! (or, at least, it's supposed to be.) Anyway, the weather outside may not be reliable, but one thing you can count on for summer time enjoyment this month is Gallery Deluxe Gallery! For the next two weeks you can still come by and enjoy a glimpse of what summer should be like - rolling in the grass! Ho Wu has installed real, green grass in the main gallery, and it's awesome!

Also, just to keep you in the loop, it looks like the gallery will indeed be closing in September, but we've got some really good things going on until then. More information on the final days soon. We promise. But for now, we've finally spent some time, and updated the website archives section. So go check that out and see what you've been missing if you haven't been around. We also finally go Iris Porter's exhibit documented (after the fact) and online. So there you go. Awesome.

PF Flyers Diorama Competition!*

no longer accepting proposals

Thank you to everyone who has submitted a proposal to our tiny gallery, and our new, even tinier satellite space, Gallery Diorama Gallery. We are no longer accepting proposals, and we have made our final selection for the calendar year ending in July.

As of right now, the future of the Gallery is uncertain. We may move out of this house, we may not. But with things being up in the air, we will not be planning any further than July. In the event that we do decide to close our doors in July... we just want to assure you that what we have planned from now until the end of the summer will make it all worth while. We are working on our book, a two year retrospective, which we hope will be done by August, and will include documentation and stories from every exhibit we will have shown at that point (33), plus lots of information about the Gallery itelf. It's a big project, and we're really excited about it. We'll put more info on this later, including how to preorder when it gets closer to the release.

OPEN CALL: DIORAMA SPACE

Gallery Deluxe Gallery is currently accepting proposals for our new satellite space, Gallery Diorama Gallery.
We have space available from February to July, and we need to fill it! The space itself is 28 x 28 inches, and 5 inches deep. It is a wall mounted box that is perfect for displaying small groups of work, or ideally, to be transformed into a diorama - as the name suggests. For more information on the space, check out the DIORAMA section of the site.

We will be accepting proposals until February 10th, 2007. If you have a preference of the month you'd like to show in, please mention that. Anyone who would like to show in February, we'll need to hear from you asap. Please include a description of your proposed exhibit, and some pictures of the work, if you can.

the gallery filled with a milky lake!

Happy New Year, from all of us (ok, all two of us) at Gallery Deluxe Gallery! It's been another great year for us, and we've got a lot of great things planned for 2007. And, to ring in the new year, we have a really, really great show running this January. By far, the most extreme installation our little gallery has ever seen, Tanya Busse with (Norwegian/Dutch art duo) Fritz and a Very Fast Car have filled the gallery floor with an incredible, beautiful, and totally shocking milky lake! Really. An entirely liquid floor, with video, and sculptural elements makes for one hell of an exhibit. Come check it out, and sign our guestbook. The rest of the website will be updated soon too.

Coming up at GDG:

• Lots of great exhibits, including a series of paintings/drawings from Co&Co's Kate O'Connor.
• Bakesales/fundraisers to help us make what may be the last leg of the gallery's existence, the absolute best it can be.
• A two year catalogue available for sale (hopefully, eventually) which will detail the history of our Gallery, the space itself, and all the artists who have shown here. This is our biggest, most exciting project. (come on, y'all know you love documentation!)
• And a great big secret surprise sometime in the summer, that may or may not involve live music, and that live music may or may not happen INSIDE the gallery. shhhh.
  

brand new satellite space! diorama!

Hey everyone! We piloted our brand new satellite space, Gallery Diorama Gallery last month, with the first show - "Short & Sweet", which was a collection of mini-zines curated by our local sweethearts, the Anchor Archive Zine Library. It went really well, and we're very excited about the upcoming schedule for the new little space.

Here's a little more info: It's basically a shallow box/frame, mounted on the wall just below the main gallery space, and we'll be showing work there every month, parallel to the main space. This month, we have a great show by Draw Club. Go check out the new DIORAMA section of the site, to learn more.. and then go take a look at our freshly updated calendar section, which is now up-to-date all the way to February, and includes listings for both the main space, and the diorama.

NOTICE: We are no longer accepting proposals for the gallery. We currently have dozens to go through, in order to plan the winter schedule. We will post an update when we are ready to accept more proposals. Thank you to all the artists who have submitted.

We're Back! (and we're accepting proposals!!!)

It's been a while since we've updated the site, because the gallery has been closed for the last two months, while we've taken time to prepare for the new (gallery) year, patch up, fill holes, paint and clean the gallery, and deal with other projects. But September is almost here, and we've got some good things in store.

The first show of the year will be Estella Mare's Kinderstube. Estella's work in an interesting combination of cutout dolls, animated collage, and music/video installation. It'll be a great way to start September, and kick off a whole new season of exhibits. Please come check it out on Monday, Sept. 4th, from 7-10pm and enjoy some refreshments at the opening. (There's rumours we may bring rootbeer floats!)

Also, we're on the Go North! Studio and Gallery Tour 2006, which will be happening on Saturday, September 9th. Come check out our little space, as well as a ton of other galleries and artist studios. For more information visit eyelevelgallery.ca.

We are now accepting proposals for exhibitions (solo, or group) for the rest of the year. Please email us (Paul and Francesca) with a description of your proposed exhibit, and some example images of the work. You can find information about the space itself, for installation purposes, etc.. in the "for artists" section of the site. Come on, it's a tiny little gallery! Don't you want to show your art here? (Answer: Yes, you do.)

monday june 5th - one whole year of art and friends!

Hey, guess what!

This coming Monday, June 5th is not only the opening of Marianne Collin's installation "Community Tree House" - it's also a very special day for Gallery Deluxe Gallery. It's our ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY and we'd really like for you to come!

And this show fits in perfectly with a celebration. The gallery will be wallpapered with a family-tree style paper printed by Marianne, and everyone will be given the chance to place themselves somewhere on the "Community Tree". We'll be building a little record of our friends, neighbours, artists, and the art community who support them/us on the walls of the gallery, and we'd love it if you could be a part of it too! Help us celebrate one year of D.I.Y. art exhibition by letting us count you among our friends! See you there, 7-10pm.

website update: archives - we're on it!

We're back on the updating train folks, and we're doing our best to get this website all caught up. We were behind in the old archives by about... oh, 4 months, give or take. But we've got it all taken care of now, so you can check out all of our past shows, right up until April's show This Will Hurt For But A Moment, by local artist Larissa Muzzy. Be sure to check out all the newly updated archives including work by Carolyn Scandiffio, Stephen Fisher and Julien Pacaud.

There's also a new feature for this section here. You can leave comments by clicking on the "comments" link below each post. Let us know what you think, or if you have any ideas/suggestions for us. We'd like to hear from you.

In other news: Gallery Deluxe Gallery was written up in the latest issue of VANS Magazine (Visual Arts Nova Scotia) as a part of an article about alternative art resources in the province.
We're also looking into the possibility of putting together a nice catalogue of sorts, to celebrate our one year anniversary in June. Right now we're looking into some help with the printing aspect of the whole thing, while gathering up all of our collected material to fill it up. (images of the last 12 shows, documentation of the space, stories, etc.) We'll keep you posted, right now this is just an idea.

another show ends, one more begins...

After a very successful five week stretch, Larissa Muzzy's show, entitled This Will Hurt For But A Moment is coming down tomorrow. The show was one of our personal favourites, here at the Gallery, and we'll be sad to see it go. (and hear it go - it featured a motion-triggered air organ.)

In it's place, this Monday, we will have the opening of our second international showing. Three Photographs Sent By Airmail From Germany To Nova Scotia And Luckily They Arrived On Time For The Show features work by young German artists Jana Euler, Elisabeth Jugert and Anna Schütte, and was co-ordinated by ex-member of Team Willow, Tamara Henderson.

So we've got lots more going on, and lots more coming up here at Gallery Deluxe Gallery. There's even a very strong (as in 98%) chance that we'll be around for another year, which means that we'll be accepting proposals very shortly. We'll let you know. We're also getting on top of the whole archives business. It will be updated soon. Promise.

Alternative Venues Peer-to-Peer Discussion

Next Tuesday night, March 28, 7pm at VANS !!!!!!!!!

Be inspired to think outside the box. We all know that the number of talented artists in Nova Scotia greatly outnumbers the available gallery space- why not take matters into your own hands and create your own exhibition space. Join Eryn Foster, Paul Hammond & Francesca Tallone and Jodi Mclaughlin in the central courtyard to discuss the motivation for exhibiting in alternative spaces, the pros and cons, tips and things to consider when launching your own exhibition in an alternative venue. Come join in the discussion.

Eryn Foster is the director of Eyelevel Gallery, one of Atlantic Canada's oldest artist-run-centres. Eyelevel has a long history of off-site and alternative programming - from it's Windows to most recently Billboards.

Paul Hammond and Francesca Tallone are co-directors of Gallery Deluxe Gallery, a gallery established in an under-used attic space of their home. Exhibitions have included local, national and international artists.

Jodi Mclaughlin is the director of the Khyber Centre of the Arts well known for its alternative exhibition spaces in the turret, closet and stairwell. Jodi is currently investigating the possibilities of a Sound Gallery broadcast in collaboration with CKDU.

An oft-foreboding way of looking at the pop-culture phenomenon that is instant photography, Parisian artist Julien Pacaud manipulates images to create these unbelievable worlds. With a delightfully black sense of humor, he intriguingly references photography as a forged document.

Well, even though we're only just a month into the new year, it's already been a busy one here at Gallery Deluxe Gallery. We're currently trying to get more listing with local/non-local mailinglists, art centers, etc. Currently we're working nicely with Eyelevel, The Coast Weekly and the Khyber Center for the Arts. (with a special thanks to Jodi McLaughlin) We hope to expand so that more people will know about our little Art Hole.

We've also had some good press recently, both in print, and radio. Two pieces on CBC Radio One even! So, we'll soon have a press section where we can boast that stuff, and you can read/listen to it all. Plus, a downloadable press kit for anyone interested.

And finally - the schedule has been changed slightly, and we're happy to announce that this February we will be showing Utopia Smash, an installation of drawing and sculpture by Halifax artist Stephen Fisher. And our exchange show of young german artists, co-ordinated by Team Willow Alumnus Tamara Henderson, will be pushed back to May. That's good, because it also gives us more time to really push that one. GERMANY, folks! Art from AWAY!

gallery deluxe gallery loses archives in tragic harddrive crash.

Well, we've had a very nice holiday here at Gallery Deluxe Gallery. Francesca was off in New York, while I was down in Ontario visiting family, and basically relaxing. And now we're back, and ready to kick the gallery back into gear - with one small exception. Ok, one huge exception.

We lost everything when our harddrive crashed. And when I say our harddrive, I mean my harddrive. Don't worry, we're resourceful enough, we'll make due without it, and it doesn't mean no more shows, or no more invites, or no more website... but it does mean that we've lost all the archived photos of old shows. Yes, they're on the site, but we have no more print-quality archives of a lot of it. And all documentation of Kevin Rodgers' exhibit Some Take and Some Get Took has been entirely lost.

So while we wait to see if any of it can be salvaged from my garbage harddrive, stop by the Gallery, starting this Monday, Jan 9th, to see the newest show - Recent work by sculptor/jeweler Carolyn Scandiffio. More info here. You can also talk to me about my poor harddrive.

change in schedule - double show to round off the year!

Due to some unfortunate miscommunication, time and resource restraints, Kira Grinberg's show has been cancelled. It's too bad that we were unable to accommodate this show, because it looked like it was going to be good.

However, all is not lost. In it's place, we have drummed up an emergency replacement show, which we feel both fills the spot appropriately, and also allows us to do something somewhat holiday appropriate. Halifax Photographer David Cieplinski, in association with the Gallery will be presenting a special two-part, double-show: HAPPY ROBOT SECRET HOLIDAY PORTRAIT STUDIO.

website update: calendar, submissions, team sections

It's taken a while to sort through everything and actually get the exhibition calendar updated properly, but it's now just about as up-to-date as it can possibly be. If any changes happen, we'll update again, but for now, you can actually plan around that schedule.

And we've added a new section called Team, which is where you can find information on the people who run Gallery Deluxe Gallery - including Elliot.

The Submissions section has also been updated, and is now called For Artists. As the section says, we're not accepting any more submissions right now, because we're basically full up til April - which is equal parts great, and unfortunate. Soon we'll have the Community section complete too, which will have links to artists and friends/allies in the arts community. For now, the next update you can expect will be in the archive section. We're working on getting documentation for Leah's and Michael's show right now. Come back and check soon.

Gallery Deluxe Gallery is now officially online! Our website will be updated regularly with calendar changes, current exhibits, news items, and general information. Please check back regularly and stay in the loop. There will also be an extensive photographic archive of all of the exhibits shown in the Gallery, which will be updated regularly. And artists can check out the Submissions section for information on submitting to show in the gallery, as well as information about the space itself.

Call for submissions

Francesca will soon be starting to accept submissions for a show she will be curating in the new year of lomographic photos. A lomographic photo is simply a photography taken with a lomo camera. Ideally, we would like to plaster the gallery walls with hundreds of 4x6 images by lomographers all over the world. So start taking pictures and collecting your favorites to submit. More information coming soon.
