Searching For Chin (first two photos) played a killer set and The Wolfnote also pulled out some pretty awesome stuff. Meeting up with the Burdocks if only for a few minutes was a highlight, and the next morning, just outside of Edmonston, we all took notice of what would later become referred to as Matt's Homers.
As usual, I arrived just after the first band (Gilbert Switzer) but the party was still going, and Attack Mode at least had not played yet. House shows are possibly my favourite setting to photograph bands in. The feeling of seeing a band in such a small, crowded space verges on surreal, and at the same time really highlights the best parts of a small independant scene like this. Here's some photos of Attack Mode tearing shit up, followed by some documentation of the rest of the evening. (the rest of the evening until I wussed out and went home in the rain, that is.)
After an unsuccessful, and largely unenjoyable attempt to "see" Death From Above the previous night at the Attic, Mark Black and I trodded down to the Pavilion for a second chance, partially in hopes that I could take some photographs with my fancy new flash. Using our suspect Halicred, we managed to snake our way into the place, and this time, actually enjoy DFA's set, while I successfully captured some ultra-wide shots. (Catano says they look straight out of a 1993 skate mag. He may be right, but I think they're cool. Maybe for that reason.) There's a more thorough review of both shows back on the regular old OptimusCrime Hali. editor's note: Remind us never to edit, prepare, and upload photos from the computer at work, who's monitor is totally effed up and displays colour like a friggin' idiot, so that when we get home, we have to spend an hour re-doing it all so our photographs don't look like total ass, and we look like art-school hacks. (No offense to art-school hacks. We loves you, we swears.)
The camera and I joined about 150 other people in the Khyber's Ballroom Gallery on Friday, April 15th to see the anticipated return of Mitch and the Motorhomes. Wierd like the B52's, engaging like the Talking Heads, and fronted by our favourite dude around town, Mitchel Weibe, Mitch and the Motorhomes have always been something to see. This show was no exception. With the room packed past capacity, and absolutely zero ventilation, the smoke-spewing skull was maybe not a smart idea, but it was an awesome one! And projecting Top Gun on the wall in the background was great. Thanks Mitch.
Attack Mode (the masked invaders who bear a striking resemblance to The Hold) and The Hold played a $2 show Thursday night at Gus' Pub on Agricola. Those who didn't attend are officially suckers. Both bands blasted through their noisy sets, which against the country-bar setting gave an entertaining contrast. Do you remember hardcore? These guys fucking do. |

And wherein the Author of Optimuscrime Halifax can publish his photographs in a seperate forum, so as not to interrupt the Optimuscrime blog-flow.
